Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Part 2 Review

The second part of the book...I did not expect at all. SPOILER (If you haven't read it): Rick Deckard does end up retiring all of the androids. But we see him struggle through it. Going back to the conversation he had with Phil Resch, he is still troubled by his growing "empathy" towards androids (but really just the female androids). I say empathy loosely because according to Resch, it's not empathy but he has sex on the mind. Which I would agree with wholeheartedly especially since Deckard ends up copulating with Rachael Rosen, who is in fact an android. Once he does, he starts thinking about how he doesn't think he can retire androids anymore. Which Rachael sort of reveals is the purpose that she does show up to the hotel with him. She also reveals that he is not the first bounty hunter that she has done that with. Deckard also finds out that Phil Resch was one of those bounty hunters. He starts to understand why Resch is the way he is towards androids - cold and calculating, almost similar to an android.

We follow Deckard through this struggle and end up a bit surprised (just like Deckard is) that Deckard was able to kill Pris, the Rachael prototype. That's when he realizes that he will still be able to do his job and that he can complete the one he currently has.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Part 1 Review

I will have to admit the first couple of chapters I struggled a bit to get through. It was almost as if the reader is just thrown into this post-apocalyptic world and are trying to undersand the terms while also getting some of the information. Once I got to the fourth/fifth chapter it started to get really interesting to me. At first we don't really know much about Rick, except for he is trying to deal with his wife's self-caused depression and the fact that he has an electric sheep because his live one died. Then I found out that he is a bounty hunter for androids. The part that was really interesting to me was when Rick had to give the VK test to Rachael. He at first got her on a few questions but then when she passed, he almost walked out thinking he had failed. But something about the way she was talking about the owl made him ask one more question. With that last question, he reinstated the validity of the VK test.

The next thing that was very interesting because it was a twist was when Rick went after Luft and he met the android-infested station. They have gone so far undetected by the actual police station and other people and Rick just stumbled across it.

I'm really excited to finish the book and find out what happens next!
